View of a tea garden  on the way to Kaziranga.

Village girl  - apparently familiar with gawking tourists.

Paddy fields.

The countryside opens up very soon after leaving the city behind.

Green fields and clear skies.

Sunny winter day.

Village scene.

View of the park area from the entrance, the river Brahmaputra in the far distance.

Entering the park proper.

Swamp deer.

The fearless adventurers.

Finally, a rhino in the distance.

Sunset in Kaziranga.

Another view of the sunset.

After we wait silently for a quarter of an hour, the rhino steps out of the grass, sees us, and stops.

This rhino has lost its horn fighting, and has had one of its ears chewed off by another rhino (that explains the name Holyfield).

Just about this time I began to feel that maybe we might have been better off a little farther away from him.

Early morning and we’re off to the elephant ride.

Morning views of the open grassland.

Marker showing how high the flood water gets every year.

The elephants arrive.

Where’s mama ?

This is the one we’ll get to ride.

Off to see the animals.

The mist clears up as we move out.

Mom and baby flushed out of cover by the elephants.

The baby stops to look at us.

Mom and baby rhino with deer in the distance.

The baby elephants follow their moms throughout the ride.

At the end of the ride.

The Wild Grass Lodge.

Another view of the lodge where we stayed.

The colonial-style lodge is pretty neat, and tea is served in style.

Arjun with his granddad by the Brahmaputra, near Tezpur, on our way back. The bridge across the river can be seen in the distance.

The highway, going back home.

Baby elephant at the Guwahati zoo. Fell down a hillside and broke his leg, poor chap.

Peacock in a good mood.

Another couple of elephants at the zoo.

These monkeys are not part of the zoo, but live in it.

Naptime for tiger.

Almost naptime for hippo.

Trucker’s philosophy.

View along the Guwahati-Shillong road.

Another view from the road.

The truckers are very polite.

I wonder what exactly that means ?
